Great catch! The New York Daily News is http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/joe-torre-daughter-cristina-saves-falling-baby-perfect-catch-article-1.1377032 reporting that a woman who was being hailed by cops as a heroine for catching a one-year-old baby boy after the child fell from the second floor of a building in Bay Ridge on June 19 is the daughter of baseball great Joe Torre.

Cristina Torre, whose name was not immediately released by police, was walking by a building at 9104 Third Ave. at approximately 10 a.m. when she saw the baby fall off a store awning, according to reports.

“Luckily, the passerby caught the baby,” said Police Officer Vito Viola of the 68th Precinct.

The baby had somehow crawled out the window of the family’s apartment, crawled onto a fire escape, and then stepped down to a store awning, Viola said. The child’s parents were apparently sleeping when the incident took place, the officer said.

The baby tumbled off the store awning, Viola said. “It’s a good thing the good samaritan was there. She really saved the day,” he said.

Torre, whose famous dad startred his career as a catcher, not only saved the baby from falling to the ground, she called 911, police said.

The baby was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, according to police, who said he suffered a small with a cut on his mouth. The baby’s parents were arrested on charges of child endangerment, Viola said. “The baby’s three siblings were also taken to Lutheran Medical Center,” he said.

Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst), whose district office is located four blocks from the scene, rushed to the building as soon as he heard what had happened.

“Today I join the community in commending Cristina Torre for reacting so quickly,” Gentile said in a statement. “How lucky we are today that Cristina was in the right place at the right time. Like a true heroine, Cristina was incredibly humble. There must be something in the Torre DNA that enabled her to make such a great catch!” he said.

Gentile said the situation was “truly the Miracle on 91st Street!”

Cristina Torre could not be reached for comment.

More details will be reported as they become available.
