Judges Meet Today in Brooklyn for Political Redistricting Case
CADMAN PLAZA EAST (AP) — A federal appeals panel in Brooklyn, which is refusing to dismiss a challenge to political redistricting in New York, will meet today for a conference with attorneys for all parties, directing Magistrate Judge Roanne Mann to report and make recommendations.
State legislative leaders have argued that it’s too soon to intervene in their constitutionally delegated role in drawing district lines. Redistricting affects districts for state lawmakers and congressional seats.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he will veto the new legislative district maps proposed by the state Senate and Assembly majorities, which have been criticized by good-government groups as partisan efforts to solidify the majorities’ power.
