St. Joseph hosted the Fontbonne JV squad at the Genovessi Center at St. Francis College on Thursday, Jan. 12. The first quarter proved to be a defensive struggle, as St. Joe’s out-rebounded the Bonnies to take a 5-3 lead.

In the second quarter, Fontbonne’s offense came alive as the Bonnies went on a 17-4 run to take a 20-9 lead at the half. Adriana Baumoussa and Eldina Ahmetas, with 6 points apiece, were both strong under the basket to give Fontbonne their halftime advantage.

Accounting for the second-quarter run that was the game-changer for the Bonnies, Assistant Coach Pat Nash stated, “The girls began to handle the ball better and ran our plays as drawn up.”

Continuing to handle the ball more carefully, the Bonnies ran up a 29-11 lead in the third quarter as Elise Sammon (4 points) and Katie Rivera (2 points) kept pressure on St. Joe’s with midcourt steals.

“The difference in this game was the girls’ execution,” Head Coach Anthony Barthlomeo said, agreeing with his assistant’s observation. “This is basically a freshmen team that is starting to come around.”

This win gives the JV a record of 3-2; 2-2, good for third place behind second-place Bishop Kearney and first-place St. Edmund Prep.
