LIU Brooklyn Athletics Hall of Fame member Roy Rubin passed away Monday at the age of 87. Rubin served as the head men’s basketball coach at LIU for 11 seasons, helping lead the Blackbirds to national prominence during the 1960s.

“Roy has always been recognized as one of the founding fathers of LIU Brooklyn Athletics, along with Clair Bee and Buck Lai,” LIU Brooklyn Director of Athletics John Suarez said.  “His career speaks for itself and dedication to his players and their love for him lasted an entire lifetime. He will truly be missed.”

Rubin guided LIU Brooklyn to a 174-94 record, and helped the Blackbirds win three Tri-State League championships. LIU was selected to three consecutive NCAA College Division Tournaments from 1964-67, captured two Eastern Regional championships, appeared in two NCAA Tournaments, won three ECAC Division II titles and received a bid to the NIT in 1968.

Later in his career, Rubin was the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and previously was the boy’s basketball coach at Christopher Columbus High School in New York.

Funeral arrangements have been made for Friday, Aug. 9 at the following address:

The Star of David
