Residents who enjoy the Fifth Avenue Spring Festival in Bay Ridge this Sunday can bring home more than cotton candy and carnival prizes, thanks to Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who is co-sponsoring a pet adoption event at the street fair.
Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) said she’s joining forces with Pet Lovers United as One (PLUTO) to co-host a pet adoption corner at the festival to help rescued dogs and cats find loving homes. The group will set up a station on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 74th Street at the festival on Sunday, June 2. The pet adoption corner will be open from noon to 3 p.m.
“As the owner of two dogs, I know how much love and joy animals can bring to a family,” Malliotakis said. “The animals rescued by PLUTO are desperately in need of a loving home to call their own. By adopting a pet, not only are you doing a great thing for that animal, but you are adding a loyal companion to your family and your life. I hope that many people will have a chance to stop by our event and meet their new best friend,” she said.
Malliotakis knows what it is to take animals into her home. Both of her dogs are adopted. "I didn't adopt them through PLUTO. I adopted them from families who could no longer care for them," she told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
All animals are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations, according to PLUTO representatives. Among the cute pets waiting for a home are Pino, a tabby cat, and Jada, a friendly-looking Labrador retriever.
Sponsored by the Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, the Fifth Avenue Spring Festival is an annual street fair that stretches 16 blocks, from 69th Street to 85th Street, and features rides, games, concerts, and dance performances, street vendors selling merchandise, sidewalk cafes, and carnival booths. The festival is traditionally held on the first Sunday in June.
