Witnesses said they saw a man jump from the upper level of the the Verrazano Bridge sometime before 4 p.m. Wednesday, but an extensive search has not yet turned up a body, according to Bensonhurst Bean.

MTA officials did confirm that there was a bridge jumper. Witnesses said they saw a car stop in the right Staten Island-bound lane. The driver exited the vehicle and immediately jumped, an MTA spokeswoman told SI Live.

There have been five suicides on the bridge since December of 2011. The MTA has installed suicide-prevention phones on the bridge alongside signs which read “Life is worth living.”
