Borough President Marty Markowitz might only have a few months left in office, but that isn’t stopping him from making his voice heard in local elections around Brooklyn.

On Monday, Markowitz, who is in the final months of his third term in office, announced that he was endorsing Democrat Mark Treyger for the City Council seat in the 47th Council District, a seat that covers Coney Island, Gravesend and parts of Bensonhurst. Domenic Recchia, who currently represents the district, is term-limited.

Markowitz fondly referred to Treyger, a New Utrecht High School civics teacher and a Bensonhurst Democratic Party activist, as “a real mensch.”

Treyger is running in the Democratic Primary on Sept. 10 against a crowded field that includes John Lisyanskiy, Todd Dobrin and Pastor Connis Mobley. The winner will take on Republican Andy Sullivan in the Nov. 5 general election.

“Mark Treyger represents the very best in a new generation of leadership for our borough. Mark is a real mensch – honest, hardworking, and able to build diverse coalitions to solve neighborhood problems,” Markowitz said.

“Mark has a vision for Coney Island that will bring opportunity to every corner of one of the greatest – and most historic – neighborhoods in our city and country,” the borough president said.

Treyger said he was honored to receive the borough president’s endorsement. “Nobody works harder for the 2.6 million people who call Brooklyn home than our borough president, Marty Markowitz. Marty has worked tirelessly to stimulate and grow Brooklyn’s economy, create affordable housing, preserve our neighborhood character, and support our cultural institutions. He understands that Brooklyn is more than trendy neighborhoods and an international brand- our borough is home to working families with real concerns – and that’s what makes him so special,” Treyger said.

Markowitz is the latest high profile elected official to announce his support for Treyger. On Aug. 23, Treyger picked up the support of US Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn-Queens), whose district includes Coney Island and Sea Gate.

Treyger is also boasting of endorsements from US Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Coney Island-Bensonhurst-parts of Manhattan). US Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) Assemblyman Bill Colton (D-Gravesend-Bensonhurst), Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Sunset Park) Councilman David Greenfield (D-Borough Park-Midwood-parts of Bensonhurst), Vincent Gentile (Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) and Lew Fidler (D-Canarsie-Sheepshead Bay).
