A new poll shows New York City Democratic mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio surging past the 40 percent threshold that would avoid a runoff election.

The Quinnipiac University poll shows de Blasio, the public advocate, as the choice of 43 percent of likely Democratic voters.

This is the first time any poll this year has a candidate eclipsing 40 percent. If no one does, the top two finishers in the Sept. 10 primary advance to an Oct. 1 runoff.

Ex-comptroller Bill Thompson is second at 20 percent. He’s followed by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn at 18.

If there’s a runoff, the poll indicates that de Blasio handily defeats Thompson or Quinn.

The poll surveyed 750 likely Democratic primary voters. The margin of error is 3.6 percentage points.
