One-Stop-Shop medical center to open in Bensonhurst

A new medical facility, hailed by its developers as a “one-stop-shop” place for patients seeking health care, is set to open in Bensonhurst within the next few weeks, officials said.

Calko Medical Center, a $60 million, 100,000 square foot facility, is located at 6010 Bay Parkway. The developers, Dr. Robert Kodsi and Mark Caller of The Marcal Group will celebrate the completion of construction on March 20 by offering tours of the building to elected officials and civic leaders.

“This center represents a significant milestone in how patients receive medical care,” said http://robertkodsimd.com/ Kodsi, a gastroenterologist. “No longer will patients have to wait hours in the emergency room, days for lab results and travel all over the city to see different doctors. Calko is a one-stop shop for comprehensive medical care,” he said.

The nine-story building will have a state of the art urgent care center, a comprehensive orthopedic department, a pain management center, a pathology lab, a fertility clinic, an ambulatory surgical center and 30,000-square-feet of private physician space. It also boasts one of the largest endoscopy programs in the country with the latest imaging equipment and a state-of-the-art radiology department electronically linked to doctors’ offices and hospitals, Kodsi said.

Kodsi and Caller estimated that their new medical center will bring more than $40 million a year in business to Brooklyn. The center will also be partnering with Bishop Kearney High School, located at 2200 60th St., across the street, offering internships to its students.

Calko will bring several Brooklyn medical practices together under one roof. Brooklyn Surgical Center, Genesis Fertility, Borough Park Anesthesia Associate’s Pain Management Center, and Dr. Jack Choueka and Maimonides Medical Center Orthopedic Group are part of the center, along with gastroenterologists, internists, pathologists and reproductive endocrinologists.

Doctors on Call, which is also part of the center, is a Medicare recognized medical group providing in-home visits to the frail and home bound elderly throughout New York City.

Medical Center and will provide anesthesiology and laboratory services for the facility. The hospital’s Bone and Joint Center will also be located in the buiding.

The hospital has no ownership interest in the building, however, according to the developers.

The center is designed with the patient’s comfort in mind, according to Kodsi, who said it will offer complimentary parking and internet, as well as spacious and comfortable waiting rooms. Records will be stored in a central computer so information is instantaneously accessible to specialists, reducing time to make diagnoses. The pathology lab will turn around results in 24 hours, and with an on-site pharmacy,

Patients will be able to return home with their medication without stopping at a drug store.

“The current health care system is clearly not working,” Kodsi said. “It is plagued by inefficiencies, long waits, administrative disorganization and high co-pays, which keep people from seeking the care they need. Calko will change that. We are a model for how medical care will and should be performed in the future,” he said.

The plans for Calko Medical were developed after a chance meeting between Kodsi and Caller, a real estate developer. Caller had been trying to develop the parcel of land on Bay Parkway for five years and met Kodsi, who had an idea ton establish a new kind of medical center. Construction began in May of 2011.
