Assemblymen Steven Cymbrowitz and Alec Brook-Krasny, whose respective districts include portions of Brighton Beach, expressed their outrage over a recent New York Times article that described Russian-speaking Americans living in Brighton Beach as “criminals.” The Assemblymembers called the William K. Rashburn piece, titled “A $250 Million Fraud Scheme Finds a Path to Brighton Beach,” offensive for suggesting that, “disdain for the rules and a willingness to cheat to get around them” is illustrative of “the Russian mind-set” in Brighton Beach. In this photo, Cymbrowitz speaks at a rally in front of the Shorefront YMHA in Brighton Beach, demanding that the Times’ publisher, editor and reporter apologize to the Russian-speaking community.
