A post-hurricane message from Brooklyn Law School

Our BLS buildings are intact-apparently there was no significant damage to our properties except for losing internet and telephone service intermittently —  though many of our students, faculty, and staff have experienced horrific damage to their homes, property and local neighborhoods.  Our hearts and prayers go out to them and to everyone who was hit by the devastating storm, especially those families who lost loved ones and those who were injured.

“The Law School has been closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  We reopen[ed] Thursday, Nov. 1 and [are] follow[ing] our regular Thursday and Friday class schedule.  Many events, activities and meetings have been cancelled and will be rescheduled. Consult our website for more information. This includes our annual alumni luncheon scheduled for Friday Nov. 2 at the Plaza Hotel which will be held at a later date yet to be determined

Classes that were canceled this week will be starting next week on a workable, phased in schedule and we expect to be all caught up by the week after Thanksgiving.  All classes, starting tomorrow, for as long as necessary, will be taped, and we will make every accommodation possible, to assure that students who are unable to get to the law school will be able to cover the material and will not be at a disadvantage.

Students and others are helping to arrange an informal clearinghouse for those who live near the law school to provide temporary housing for those who will find commuting back and forth very difficult.  Our students are also already making arrangements for taking notes, planning study groups, and generally helping each other out.

Our faculty is setting an impressive example, by preparing, teaching, and just getting to the law school under very extraordinary circumstances. I am especially proud of our dedicated staff and senior managers and administrators who have been working around the clock for many days, and our guards, maintenance workers, and IT staff who have literally ‘camped out” on site and have not been home for quite a while, in order to keep the law school safe and operational and to assure that we will hit the ground running when we reopen tomorrow.

It has, in brief, been a “Dunkirk style” response by our entire community enabling us to cope and regroup and move forward.  It’s what you expect in Brooklyn.
