New York City homeowners might not be aware of this, but they have the right to contest their property taxes.

City Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) will tell homeowners how they can stand up for their rights. Property tax rates are set by the city’s Department of Finance. Many homeowners in Bay Ridge complain that the taxes are excessive.

Gentile is sponsoring a forum, “How To Appeal Your Property Taxes,” on Monday, Feb. 11, at Our Lady of Angels auditorium, 7320 Fourth Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Parking will be available in the church lot. The entrance is on 74th Street.

Questions about property tax rates will be answered by Kirk Tzanides, commissioner of the New York City Tax Commission.

For more information on the forum, call Gentile’s office at 718-748-5200, ext. 203.
