Mayor Bill de Blasio has chosen Amy Peterson to lead New York City's sluggish Superstorm Sandy rebuilding efforts.

A city official who's been briefed on the decision confirmed the choice Wednesday. The official is not authorized to speak publicly before the mayor's announcement and therefore spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Peterson spent a decade in city government before working for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. There, she focused on Ground Zero rebuilding.

She now runs the group Nontraditional Employment for Women.

Last month, de Blasio called the city's rebuilding efforts after the 2012 storm "a profound problem."

De Blasio is expected to announce the appointment within the next week.

His choice was first reported by the website DNAinfo New York.
