Hundreds of screaming young fans of pop star Justin Bieber gathered on the streets and sidewalks near Barclays Center on Monday night before the show and chased a tour bus they believed had Bieber in it down residential Dean Street, reports Peter Krashes of the Dean Street Block Association on the community input website Atlantic Yards Watch.

Krashes posted videos of the night’s action, which shows crowds of cell phone-waving youngsters stampeding down sidewalks and across intersections while ignoring orders of police.

“The fans were very excitable,” Krashes writes. “They ran without regard to traffic.  They screamed without regard to residents, many of whom were presumably trying to sleep nearby.”

Krashes provides a blow-by-blow description of each video. “The police try unsuccessfully to keep the sidewalk free. The fans excitedly chase the bus down Dean Street without regard to traffic or nearby residences,” he writes.  “Deputy Inspector Ameri from the 78th Precinct is on a bullhorn telling the fans to clear the street.”

After the bus leaves, “The fans continue to be excited.  They continue to gather near the loading dock and bicycle parking area near residences.  They scream when a black SUV appears and when another or the same tour bus arrives.  They believe they see someone named Kenny.  One fan says ‘Oh my God, I am going to kill myself.’”

The situation continues. “The fans continue to refuse to leave and don’t show much respect for Barclays Center security.  A documentary filmmaker making a film on fandom says the situation is “not good.”

The Atlantic Yards Report blog points out “It didn’t happen with Jay-Z, or Streisand,” but adds, “There’s a very small margin for error” when it comes to the impact of boisterous fans, since such Barclays Arena is so tightly situated in a residential neighborhood.

The New York Daily News reports that once inside, “Le Bieb descended to the stage on looming wings, like a great speckled bird.”

Atlantic Yards Watch is co-sponsored by the Boerum Hill Association, the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council and the Park Slope Civic Council. Its purpose is to gather and process information related to the operation and implementation of the Atlantic Yards Project.
