In its second year, Books Beneath the Bridge has quickly become known as one of Brooklyn’s most comprehensive literary programs, presenting scenic readings by esteemed authors at the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park. For the past several summer Mondays, local independent bookstores across the borough have partnered with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy to host these bookish events. The Aug. 5 reading, coordinated by Greenpoint’s WORD Bookstore, is aptly titled “5 Borough Blues” and will feature Colson Whitehead (Manhattan), Victor LaValle (Queens), Kevin Baker (Bronx), Alina Simone (Brooklyn) and Shay Youngblood (Staten Island).

Next week’s program, presented by Cobble Hill’s BookCourt, will feature Brooklyn-based writer Ayana Mathis, who will read from her debut novel “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie”.

The Aug. 5 event will begin at 7 p.m. at Pier 1’s Granite Prospect in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
