Trader Joe’s peanut butter and almond butter recall expands

Dump those jars of Traders Joe’s peanut butter and almond butter: The New York City Health Department says the creamy products are linked to a national outbreak of Salmonella infections.

So far 30 cases of salmonella illnesses in 19 states have been linked to the nut butters, manufactured by Sunland, Inc.

Sunland says it is expanding the recall to all of its almond butter, peanut butter and cashew butters, tahini and roasted blanched products with best buy dates between May 1, 2013 and September 24, 2013.

The Trader Joe’s brands are labeled Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter, Trader Joe’s Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds and Trader Joe’s Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds.

Besides Trader Joe’s, Sunland also sells nut butters under the brand names Archer Farms (Target’s in-store brand), Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Harry & Davis, Heinens, Joseph’s, Natural Value, Naturally More, Open Nature, Peanut Power, Serious Food Silly Prices, Snaclite, Sprouts, Sunland and Dogsbutter.

In addition, Whole Foods is recalling peanut butter cookies made with Sunland peanut butter. For a full list of recalled items, click here.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain or more severe illnesses such as arterial infections.

Customers who have purchased these items are urged to not eat the products, and to dispose of them or return them to the store for a refund.
