Volunteers Create Garden for Senior Housing Residents

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens launched National Volunteer Week, April 15-20, 2012, along with alumni from the University of Scranton, who built a tranquility garden, on the doorsteps of 3677 Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) property, and home to the Catholic Charities Sheepshead Bay-Nostrand Senior Center. Volunteers also participated in an extreme makeover of The Catholic Charities Bay Senior Center by painting and beautifying the dining room and other common areas for the seniors to enjoy their “home away from home”. Seniors, community members and volunteers celebrated the event in block-party style fashion with great food, music and dancing.

The Home Depot, Long Island City store location donated flowers and potting supplies for the gardening project. Steven Pastore, Regional Pro Manager of Glidden Paint, donated paint and related supplies. KBM Construction was on-hand assisting the volunteers in painting and gardening.

The Catholic Charities Sheepshead Bay-Nostrand Senior Center and The Catholic Charities Bay Senior Center, funded by the New York City Department for the Aging and supported by NYCHA provide an array of services to our seniors residing at the Sheepshead and Nostrand NYCHA Houses and in the community.
