Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy has announced its very first Winter Talks & Tours Series, designed to offer a whole new perspective on Brooklyn Bridge Park and its rich history. The tours begin Jan. 25 and last through Feb. 15:

Living Aquatic Infrastructures | Jan. 25 at 3:00 p.m.
As New York’s waterfronts continue to expand, we are faced with the effects of rising tides, extreme weather, and the knowledge that new structures threaten the rich marine ecosystems along our coastlines. But what if new developments helped marine life? Learn about ecologically sensitive design and construction technologies that enhance coastal and marine infrastructure’s ability to provide valuable ecosystem services. Guide: Dr. Ido Sell, SeArc Ecological Marine Consulting

Brooklyn Waterfront History | Feb. 1 at 3:00 p.m.

Enjoy a richly-illustrated talk on the park’s often-overlooked pre-history. We’ll start from the arrival of the Dutch in the first decades of the 17th century to the mid-20th century when commercial activity on the waterfront began to decline and the cantilevered Brooklyn Queens Expressway was threaded between historic Brooklyn Heights and existing warehouses. Guide: Matt Postal, Architectural Historian

Discovering Winter Plants | Feb. 8 at 3:00 p.m.

Learn to read the winter landscape! Join BBP gardeners in identifying trees throughout the park using only twigs, buds, bark and fruit. This hands-on tour will explore the characteristics of both native and common urban tree species. Guides: Chet Schmitt & Marina McCoy, Brooklyn Bridge Park Horticulturalists.

The Secret Life of Evergreens | Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m.
The last of the bright yellows and reds have long ago fallen from most trees, but evergreens stand lush and green all winter long. Learn what sets these tenacious trees apart and the tricks they use to flourish in the coldest months. Get out and explore some of the park’s newest plantings with former Senior Curator of Horticulture and a long-time instructor at the NY Botanical Garden, Michael Ruggiero

All tours meet at the park offices (334 Furman Street) and will be both indoors and out. RSVPs are required for each event, as space is limited. Availability is first come, first served. Visit http://www.brooklynbridgepark.org/events/calendar to RSVP.
