Women are often the primary caregivers in the family, but do they take care of themselves?

To help women understand the importance of looking after their health, a Brooklyn lawmaker is joining forces with one of the borough’s largest hospitals to host an informational night.

And dinner is included!

Breast cancer detection and treatment will be the main topics of discussion at a special symposium focusing on women’s health co-sponsored by Maimonides Medical Center and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis on Nov. 20.

The forum will be presented on Nov. 20, at Holy Angels Academy, 337 74th St., from 7-9 p.m.

The speakers will include Dr. Donna-Marie Manasseh, director of breast surgery at Maimonides, and Dr. Christina Giuliano, director of breast imaging at the hospital.

The doctors will share information on mammography, benign and malignant breast disease, genetics and other topics affecting the health of women, according to Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island).

“The unique health risks facing women require heightened attention,” Malliotakis said. “It is crucial to become informed on both risk factors and preventative measures to lead a long, healthy life. Maimonides Medical Center is a terrific advocate for healthy living in our community, and I look forward to co-hosting this event which will be extremely beneficial for all.”

Maimonides Medical Center, at 4802 10th Ave. in Borough Park, also operates a separate cancer center at 745 64th St. in Sunset Park. The facility, which treats all sorts of cancers, includes a breast cancer center.

Breast cancer is among the most common types of cancers affecting women in New York, according to the state’s Department of Health. Each year in New York State, over 14,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost 2,700 women die from the disease. It is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her life.

Participants of the women’s health-care symposium will be treated to a free dinner and will receive gifts, Malliotakis said.

The event is free, but registration is required. To register, call Maimonides Medical Center at 718-283-8832.

Malliotakis has sponsored health related events before in the Brooklyn end of her assembly district.

On three days in August and September, she and state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southern Brooklyn) worked with a private company, Heartscan Services Inc., to offer free heart and stroke screenings at the district office they share at 7408 Fifth Ave.

“The best way to fight stroke and heart problems is to stop them before they start,” Malliotakis said at the time.
