The city’s Department of Education (DOE) is looking for the best teachers in New York City.

DOE, with support from the Fund for Public Schools, has launched the second annual Big Apple Awards: Recognizing Teacher Excellence in New York City, and the deadline for nominations is January 17.

“The Big Apple Awards allow all New Yorkers to tell the story of those exceptional educators who are making that transformation happen on the ground, each day, in our classrooms,” Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott saidin a statement.

Anyone – students, families, teachers, administrators, and community members – can submit a nomination by visiting the Big Apples Awards website or may email or email [email protected]

Last year, from 2,000 nominations, 51 teachers from across all five boroughs were chosen as finalists, DOE says. From those 51 finalists, 11 recipients were selected: 2 from the Bronx, 5 from Brooklyn and 4 from Manhattan.

Last year’s Brooklyn winners included: Erika Bogdany, Brooklyn Bridge Academy; Catherine Downey, P.S. 128 Bensonhurst; Patrick Berry, Whitelaw Reid Junior High School; Kristin Ferrales, Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice; Kimberly McCorkell, P.S. 222 Katherine R. Snyder.

Most of the nominations came from families, DOE said.

Nominees must be current, full-time public school teachers and who have “demonstrated exceptional success in impacting students’ learning, in their instructional practices, and in their professional contributions to their school community.”

Up to 50 finalists will be interviewed and visited in their classrooms.  Of the finalists, ten outstanding educators will receive a Big Apple Award and will be honored at a celebration in June.  The ten awardees will spend the 2014-15 school year, in addition to teaching, serving as ambassadors and advisors for the Department.
