by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 10-23-2009

Evening of Jazz in Fort Greene

FORT GREENE — Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC) will host an early evening of great jazz by celebrating its 10th year of providing affordable cultural entertainment.

This anniversary jubilee is open to all and will take place on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Jazz 966, located at 966 Fulton St. in Fort Greene. The concert will feature performances by Grammy-nominated Papo Vazquez and His Pirates Troubadours; the Central Brooklyn Jazz All Stars; and the Boys and Girls High School Jazz Band. Doors open at 3 p.m., with performances from 3:30 to 8 p.m.

Trombonist and composer Papo Vazquez and His Pirates Troubadours ensemble blend jazz, Latin jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Papo’s recording, “Marooned/Aislado,” on his own Picaro Records label, was nominated in 2008 for a Grammy. Vazquez has performed with jazz luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Wayne Shorter, Eddie Palmieri and more.

The Central Brooklyn Jazz All Stars was created in 1992 to pay homage to such Brooklyn jazz legends as Max Roach, Betty Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Dr. Randy Weston, among others.

The Boys and Girls High School Jazz Band, a 15-piece ensemble, is led by music teacher and bassist Mattathias Person. Mr. Person, a respected musician, played in the bands of Frank Foster, Jackie McLean, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and others.
