Dennis Tomkins: New Paintings. Through Nov. 28.

“Who Shot Rock & Roll, A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present.” Through Jan. 31. An exhibition of more than 175 works by 105 photographers, including many rare and never-before-exhibited photographs, that gave the music its visual identity.
“James Tissot: The Life of Christ.” Through Jan 17. The 124 detailed watercolors in this exhibition were selected from a series of 350, purchased by the Museum in 1900 by public subscription, which the Brooklyn Eagle played an important role in furthering. The pivotal acquisition doubled the Museum’s then slender holdings. This exhibition marks the first time in more than 20 years that these works will be on view.

Steven Dobbin: “Reclamation.” Through Dec. 7. Dobbin’s latest series — made from recycled cans reclaimed from local areas — is in response to the increasing costs of materials typically used to create artworks.

Paintings by Patricia Brintle. Through Nov. 30. Brintle was born in Haiti and immigrated to the United States in 1964. A self-taught artist, she devoted herself completely to painting after 22 years career with a New York utility company.

Arelah’s Dance Benefit. ActNow: New Voices in Black Cinema. Dec. 1. Works by up-and-coming black filmmakers. This edition features Still Bill, a documentary by Damani Baker and Alex Vlack about the meteoric rise of legendary R&B artist Bill Withers.

Miller’s sound recordings in the Antarctic that explore the acoustic qualities of ice, “Terra Nova” allows us to encounter the climate crisis with unprecedented intimacy, giving voice to the groaning landscape as it undergoes irrevocable change.

Mendelssohn Songs Without Words. Nov. 27, at 8 p.m. This program features the U.S. premiere of Orazio Sciortino’s reconstruction of Mendelssohn’s “Orazio Sciortino Lied ohne Worte incompiuto in E-Flat Major” and the world premiere of Michele Dall’Ongaro’s “M,” based on Mendelssohn fragments. Brooklyn Sings, Brooklyn Swings: Mark Winkler. Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. Winkler is a platinum award-winning singer and lyricist who has had over 150 of his songs performed by such artists as Dianne Reeves, Randy Crawford, Liza Minnelli, Bob Dorough and Lea Salonga. He has written songs for the hit musical review “Naked Boys Singing!” and has penned lyrics for tunes by composers Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Joshua Redman and David Benoit.
