The four major movie palaces in Downtown Brooklyn had much to offer in the way of entertainment according to ads in the Brooklyn Eagle of August 27, 1939.
The RKO Albee had a Greater New York premiere of In Name Only with Carole Lombard, Cary Grant and Kay Francis with a secondary feature Charlie Chan at Treasure Island. For drama the Brooklyn Paramount was featuring Bette Davis in The Old Maid coupled with an early Betty Grable film Million Dollar Legs (were they ever!). But even more exciting, at the evening show were the Brooklyn Dodgers on stage in person to introduce their movie featurette, Watch Us Next Year.
For adventure fans the Fox offered Gary Cooper in Beau Geste with some comedy relief in the second feature Blondie Takes a Vacation. The Metropolitan’s double feature was Ann Sheridan in Winter Carnival and Robert Young in Miracles for Sale. The Met also advertised their special stage show for Tuesday night, August 29: 200 BATHING BEAUTIES competing for the title of “Brooklyn’s Glamour Girl of 1939.” They would parade to the music of the Bossert Hotel’s orchestra conducted by Terry Shand.
