Photo Contest Seeks ā€˜Dirtiest, Most Unkempt, Repulsive’ News Racks
by Linda Collins (linda@brooklyneagle.net), published online 08-29-2007

Several Brooklyn Entries Already Received

ā€œOUTRAGE!,ā€ a Municipal Art Society-sponsored photo competition launched July 26, has already produced several entries from Brooklyn.

Listed in the ā€œbest-to-dateā€ category, are one at Court and Livingston streets in Downtown Brooklyn and one on 7th Avenue in Park Slope.

The streets of New York City are littered with ā€œfilthy, poorly maintained and decrepit news racks that are both eyesores and potentially hazardousā€ to the residents of New York City, according to an MAS spokesperson.

ā€œParis, London, Berlin and Amsterdam don’t tolerate this scourge on their streets, and Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami Beach, Houston and San Francisco have cracked down on the newsrack blight, too. But New York City continues to tolerate it, and we think this is outrageous,ā€ he said.

Thus, the Municipal Art Society is seeking photographs of ā€œthe dirtiest, most unkempt, most repulsive news racks in the cityā€ to help persuade elected officials that they are ā€œrotting the Big Appleā€ and must be regulated.

Photos of news rack eyesores that are also illegally placed (within 15 feet of a fire-hydrant, at a bus stop, within five feet of a corner area) will be given special consideration The winner will get a $100 gift certificate for Urban Center Books.

Photos must be sent by Friday, Sept. 14, to newsrack@mas.org. Multiple entries are permitted.
