Brooklyn Swaps Residents With Northeast and Sunny States

Atlas Van Report Calls New York Second Highest ‘Outbound State’

BROOKLYN — California was the top destination state for those moving from Brooklyn as well as the state that supplied the borough the most new residents, according to a report by Atlas Van Lines.

The report, based on outbound and inbound destinations of Atlas’ fleet of vans over the past year, said New York state had the second highest percentage of outbound traffic last year, behind Ohio.

New York City fared better, with roughly 1,235 households renting vans to move out versus 1,290 households renting vans to move here — a net gain of 55 households, proving that the city continues to defy the statewide trend of bleeding residents.

Some listings were filed by borough and neighborhood, others under “New York City.” Brooklyn recorded 203 outbound moves, with 55 headed to California, and 149 inbound moves, with 23 headed from California.

Brooklyn also had the highest number of inbound and outbound moves filed under its borough name.

New York City, excluding those filed by borough or neighborhood, recorded 951 inbound moves, with 94 coming from California; and 796 outbound moves with 240, or 30 percent, seeking sunnier pastures in California.

Florida claimed the second-highest number of Brooklyn households, 23, while 18 Florida households moved to Brooklyn last year. The Sunshine State also came in second as the destination for outbound moves filed under “New York City,” with 137, and the third, behind Massachusetts, as the origination state for those moving to the general city.

Chicago, one of New York’s rival cities, took seven Brooklyn residents and 43 filed under New York, while eight Chicago residents moved to Brooklyn, and 65 to the city in general.

Nationally, an Atlas spokesperson said that the number of people moving from California reached a 10-year low, and that eight of the 13 states with more inbound moves than outbound are west of the Mississippi. He called this a continuation of the trend of westward expansion.

Texas claimed the highest percentage of inbound residents in the nation, though only four Brooklyn households rented an Atlas van to move there, while 16 Texan households rented one to move here.

“Rust Belt woes” continue as people escape the weak economy in the Midwest, where Ohio, Indiana and Michigan ranked in the top five states for the highest percentage of outbound moves.

People continue to shuffle around the Northeast, with 47 Brooklyn households and 157 New Yorkers — not including vans registered under a specific borough or neighborhood — moving to other states in the region last year. Meanwhile, 34 households from other Northeastern states rented an Atlas van to move to Brooklyn, and 203 rented one to move somewhere in the city.

The Southeast, according to the report, was the most stable region in the country with most states registering roughly the same amount of inbound moves as outbound moves. Brooklyn households preferred Virginia, according to the report.
