Bomb Scare Closes Jay Street During Busy Lunch Hour

Students at City Tech, Polytechnic University Told To Stay Indoors

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A bomb scare closed down Jay Street at Renaissance Plaza — where the back entrance to the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge is located — Thursday during the busy noon lunch hour.

The 32-story Renaissance Plaza, at 350 Jay St., is also home to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the New York City Law Department and the Secret Service.

A black rolling suitcase was left unattended next to a large concrete planter on the sidewalk next to the building’s garage driveway, witnesses said. A large contingent of emergency service vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances took over the street while yellow caution tape was stretched over the entrances of nearby Jay Street office buildings.

Workers in buildings along Jay Street, such as National Grid (once KeySpan), and students at the New York City College of Technology and Polytechnic University at MetroTech were temporarily prevented from leaving their buildings on the Jay Street side until the situation was resolved by the bomb squad. According to the police, the suitcase was merely filled with clothes.

“A guy from the bomb squad — wearing the suit — came right up to the suitcase, like six inches away from it, and opened it,” a woman who had observed the scene said. “Those guys don’t get paid enough.”
