Solar Lights Illuminate Spring Evenings on Montague Street
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 04-28-2008

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — In honor of Earth Day, the trees along Montague Street were decorated last week with eco-friendly solar-powered lights. The initiative is part of the Montague Street Business Improvement District’s decorative light installation Spring Lights.

“We’re delighted to draw attention to the beauty and vitality of Montague Street, and to do it in a way that’s sustainable,” said Chelsea Mauldin, executive director of the Montague Street BID. “Solar-powered lighting allows us to highlight our gorgeous streetscape — and provide an amenity to our businesses, residents, and visitors — while also minimizing our environmental impact.”

The installation, designed by Nathalie Rozot, Planning & Design, includes Japanese-style lanterns that hang from the boughs of two-dozen trees up and down the commercial corridors. A number of trees also host sensor-equipped lamps that respond to passers-by, casting shadows of leaves and branches on the sidewalk as pedestrians go past. Urban Arborists, a Brooklyn tree-services firm, installed the lights under a permit from the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.

“Excellent lighting, provided by our merchants and the city, already help make Montague Street feel safe and appealing,” said Mauldin. “Additional innovative light installations, like the Spring Lights program that Nathalie Rozot created here, take us to the next level, where our unique street is not only one of Brooklyn’s top retail corridors, but also a destination for shoppers and diners who appreciate a livable, playful urban environment.”

Timothy D. King, president of the Montague Street BID, said, “I’m very proud that the Montague Street BID has introduced another initiative to beautify the street and make it one of the most exciting commercial corridors in Brooklyn.”
