Squadron Ousts 30-year Incumbent Connor in State Senate Primary
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 09-10-2008

One of the Legislature’s most senior members, Democratic Sen. Martin Connor, lost the nomination for the Brooklyn seat he’s held since 1978 in the primary race on Tuesday. Daniel Squadron, 28, a former aide to Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, won the race with 54 percent of the vote. The 25th state Senatorial District represents Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and a slice of west Williamsburg and the Brooklyn Navy Yard neighborhood. Squadron will face Republican John Chromczak in the general election in November.

In other primary races, Democratic City Councilman Mike McMahon beat out attorney Steve Harrison for a chance to run in the 13th Congressional District Race – the seat to be vacated by Republican Rep. Vito Fossella after the unraveling of his DUI scandal. McMahon, who won 75 percent of the vote, will face former Assemblyman Robert Straniere on the Republican ticket, who took 54 percent of the vote against Dr. Jim Wyne in yesterday’s primary.

Congressman Ed Towns defended his seat, the 10th Congressional District representing Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, East New York, Midwood, Boerum Hill, Canarsie, Mill Basin, Downtown Brooklyn, and parts of Fort Greene and Williamsburg. He ran against writer/activist Kevin Powell, best known as a cast member of the first season on MTV’s Real World.
