Master Pumpkin Carver To Host Free Demonstration of His Art

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The Montague Street Business Improvement District (BID) continues its Halloween celebration with a sidewalk demonstration by renowned pumpkin-carver Hugh McMahon.

The event will be held today at 5 p.m. at the Spicy Pickle restaurant at 143 Montague St. Brooklyn Heights resident McMahon – who’s appeared on such programs as The Today Show and Late Night With David Letterman – will be demonstrating his carving skills for Montague Street shoppers and residents.

In addition to spooky Halloween creations, he’ll display his remarkable pumpkin portraits of Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. One of McMahon’s carved pumpkins will be raffled off to a Montague Street business for display. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Montague Street BID President Timothy King will preside over the festivities.

Spicy Pickle, one of Montague Street’s newest dining options, will host Tuesday’s pumpkin carving event. It will also be providing a free tasting menu of panini and pizza.

The mission of the Montague Street BID is to improve all aspects of the district, from beautifying the public realm to supporting our local and national retailers. For more information, log on to www.montagueBID.com.

Hugh McMahon has been carving spectacular gourds and melons since 1976. Examples of his pumpkin and watermelon art can be seen on his website, www.gochelsea.com/pumpkins.
