CARROLL GARDENS â On Saturday, October 14, Borough President Marty Markowitz joined members of the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation and Assembly Member Joan Millman in Carroll Gardens to officially welcome the âTransit Garden,â Brooklynâs newest community garden.
The garden, located on Metropolitan Transportation Authority property under the elevated subway platform for the F and G lines at Smith Street and Second Place, was made possible in part through $50,000 that Borough President Markowitz allocated in his 2004 capital budget.
The Transit Garden includes 30 garden plots available to the public, and will also be the location for the new Carroll Gardens Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group, a program which links urban communities seeking fresh locally grown produce with area farms.
The Carroll Gardens CSA, which buys its produce from Garden of Eve in Riverhead, Long Island, will meet at the âTransit Gardenâ on Saturdays at 10 a.m.
âItâs important that, as city-dwellers, we not lose our connection with Mother Nature, and this garden is a small part of a larger effort to keep Brooklyn green and support locally grown produce,â said Markowitz. âItâs clear that Brooklyn remains fertile ground for community gardening!â
