Flatbush Food Co-op Opens New Store on Cortelyou Road
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 05-02-2008

FLATBUSH —- The Flatbush Food Coop (FFC) announces the opening of its new store at 1415 Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn, with its official grand opening scheduled for May 18.

Following extensive renovations of the building, which was formerly occupied by the Associated supermarket, the coop offers triple the retail space of its original store across the street.

This is a major step forward in its continuing evolution from its small beginnings as an 11-member pre-order buying club operating from the basement of a Midwood home to a thriving, community-owned natural foods store with more than 3,000 members. FFC attracts hundreds of shoppers on a daily basis, who come from all over Brooklyn and beyond seeking healthy, natural products. It has been an anchor business on Cortelyou Road for more than two decades.

“We’re excited that after years of searching for the right new location to expand our services to the community, we are able to stay in the same neighborhood and cause minimal disruption to our members and shoppers with this move,” said General Manager Barry Smith.

As a response to the growing needs of FFC members and shoppers, the coop’s new home offers a more convenient and expansive shopping experience compared with its previous storefront. There is space for twice as many checkout counters and significantly more products.

Special new features include a prepared-food and deli section, soup and salad bar, organic coffee and juice bar, and a greatly expanded bulk section that includes unpackaged nuts, grains and seeds as well as herbs and spices.
