Boerum Hill Recovering from Power Outages
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-09-2008

Although Anthony Affrondi, proprietor of Los Paisanos Meat market at 162 Smith Street (right in photo), was promised an emergency generator, on Monday morning he was taking no chances with his inventory as temps reach into the upper 90s. Louis Santana (left in photo) has been moving already frozen meat and fish onto a refrigerated truck for transport to a cooler location.

Boerum Hill, including “Restaurant Row” Smith Street and several east-west residential streets, suffered from power outages beginning early Sunday evening, which delayed several subway lines, including the 2,3, and 4 lines, and halted the F and G trains altogether for a few hours. Though power has been restored to most of the area, as of Monday morning, some homes and businesses, such as Los Paisanos, were still without power.

It’s possible the current heat wave has put strains on the city’s power grid, and a Con Ed official stated the outage originated from a smoking manhole at the corner of Smith and Dean streets, reported the New York Sun. Outages occurred in parts of Staten Island and Queens as well, reported NY 1.

That helps increase click-throughs for everyone, and minimizes copyright issues. So please keep posting, but not the entire article. arturc at att.net
