Annual Hoyt Street Plant Sale Coming Up
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 04-22-2009

For more than two decades, the Hoyt Street Association has helped make Brooklyn a greener place. The annual Plant Sale, to be held on Saturday, May 2 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. provides funds for the Hoyt Street Garden (at the corner of Hoyt Street and Atlantic Avenue), the HSA grants, and other neighborhood improvement efforts.

Located at the garage of 110 Hoyt St. (near the corner of Pacific Street), the Plant Sale features numerous flowers, plants, shrubs and house plants, including colorful annuals and perennials for gardens, tree pits, window boxes, and containers. There are also shade-loving plants including hostas, impatients, ferns, and much, much more.

Plant Sale order forms are on the local green bulletin boards and also at Renaissance Properties, 71 Hoyt St. (near State Street) and at the reception desk of the Mugavero Center, 155 Dean Street (at the corner of Hoyt Street).

Plant Sale orders may be dropped off at 105 Wyckoff Street (between Hoyt Street and Smith Street) or you may call in your order at 718-596-0449. The deadline is Monday, April 25th at 5 p.m.

If you’d like to help, Plant Sale volunteers are still needed and working at the Plant Sale is a great way to meet and get to know your neighbors. Please call (718) 625-4073 to volunteer.

In addition, on the first day of the Plant Sale, May 2nd, if you bring a large plastic bag you may fill it up with free compost at the Boerum Hill Association’s Greening Day event held at the Mugavero Center’s parking lot on the south side of Pacific Street (between Hoyt Street and Bond Street). Information on Greening Day is available at 718-522-1232.

So, pick up your plants at the Hoyt Street Plant Sale and your compost from the Mugavero Center’s parking lot and be ready to paint the neighborhood green.

Also, Hoyt Street Neighborhood Meetings are held at the Mugavero Center (155 Dean Street). Meeting notices are posted on the green bulletin boards throughout the neighborhood. You do NOT need to live on Hoyt Street to attend the Hoyt Street Association events. Homeowners and tenants alike are encouraged to attend, as well as residents, staff, and visitors of the Mugavero Center. For more information, please call (718) 237-0145.
