Weiner Calls on Clinton To Review Saudi Textbooks
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 07-30-2009

WASHINGTON– Representative Anthony D. Weiner (D-Brooklyn/ Queens) and 23 other Members of Congress recently called upon Secretary Hillary Clinton to direct the State Department to conduct an annual review of Saudi Arabian textbooks that teach historical inaccuracies, propagate the subjugation of women, and educate their children to hate Jews, Christians and other non-Muslims.

In a letter to Clinton, the bipartisan coalition of members pointed out that every year Saudi Arabian officials assure the United States that these textbooks will be reviewed and that offensive, inaccurate material will be removed. Yet each year, Saudi officials do little to reform the system and continue to educate a new generation of Saudi children with dishonest, hateful teachings.

Weiner released a report last month that found that despite repeated claims from Saudi officials since 2003 that current Saudi textbooks no longer include “inappropriate” language, Saudi textbooks continue to use the same hateful and violent speech towards Jews, Christians, other non-Muslims and women.

The most recent language approved by the Saudi Department of Education, says Weiner’s office, teaches young students that Jews should be killed, that Muslims who convert, question, or doubt Islam must repent or be killed, and that parents have the right to force their children into marriages against their will.

During President Obama’s first trip to Saudi Arabia, Rep. Weiner wrote a letter to the President urging him to address these hate-filled teachings in his meetings with Saudi leaders.
