Opera sung in the middle of the street easily became the main attraction for the crowd strolling Montague Street’s car-free Summer Spaces last Sunday, which continue on Sept. 20 and 27.
Talented members of the Martha Cardona Theater, a new Brooklyn-based group, set up a tall backdrop, plugged a keyboard and loudspeakers into a nearby shop’s electric outlet and in costumes performed scenes from La Boheme, L’Elisir d’Amore, Rigoletto and Gianni Schicchi. Some of the audience was seated in chairs provided by the city’s Department of Transportation, co-sponsor of the events organized by the Montague Street Business Improvement District (BID). Several restaurants offered food samples, as noshing was the theme of the day.
Theater again will be offered this coming Sunda, when the Heights Players perform excerpts from Candide at 3 p.m. Among other planned activities are free yoga classes, massages, chess lessons, make-up tips, outdoor lounging and a flea market.
Montague Street becomes a pedestrian mall on Sunday from Clinton Street to Hicks Street from noon to 5 p.m.
