BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — What do Michael Jackson, a mummy, and an Italian hoagie sandwich have in common?
To the general amusement of spectators, they all pranced up the Brooklyn Heights Promenade in Sunday’s 7th Annual Brooklyn Howl-o-Ween Doggie Costume Parade and Contest. The parade ended at Columbia Heights at Middagh Street, where a doggie runway and judging stand (judges were in costume as well) were set up.
This popular event, which drew more than 50 costumed dogs and their proud owners, serves as a charity fundraiser, organized by Perfect Paws and Friends of Hillside Dog Park (www.hillsidedogs.org). Proceeds are donated to Friends of Hillside Dog Park; Animal Kind, a no-kill cat shelter; Blue Rider Stables, a therapy horse stable; and Brooklyn Animal Foster Network.
Though the cuteness factor was over the top in almost all cases (and all the parade entrants received a doggie goodie bag), there were some official winners:
• Best overall costume: Jamie Tropia and her Poodle, Baby as The Phantom of the Opera
• Best group or duo: Mathew Parker and Martina Sabacka with their Spinone, Guisseppe as Pilot, Flight Attendant and Airplane.
Other top awards went to:
• Jessie Martinez and her Pomeranian, Fabio as Michael Jackson
• Mr. Rosales and his Poodle, Elliot as Dr. Berkenstein and his "Creation"
• Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty and their Italian Gray Hounds, Auggie and Gussy as Horse and Jockey
• Ms. Blake with her French Bull Dog Josephine dressed as a Mummy
• The Devinney Family with their Yorkie Emma as an Italian Hoagie Sandwich
• The Field Family with their Yorkie Cricket as a Witch
• Ms. Molluso with her English Bull Dog Lilly as a Cavewoman
• Ms. Bacolas with her Poodle Ginger as a Princess
