St. Francis Scholars Meet Donors Who Supported Education

School Has More Than 200 Endowed Scholarships

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — More than 50 of the brightest students at St. Francis College met with the alumni and friends of the College who funded their education at the Annual Endowed Scholarship Reception held earlier this month in McArdle Hall.

“A night like this gives meaning to both the donors and students,” said St. Francis College President Brendan J. Dugan. “The students are very thankful of the people who’ve made their education possible and the donors get a strong sense of pride when they see how their money is making a real difference in a student’s life.

Among those who spoke at the reception were sisters Anne and Julie Kelly, who both graduated St. Francis in 1979 and recently established the Julie and Anne Kelly Scholarship; and Matthew Anderson ’12, who received the Brother George Larkin, O.S.F. ’60 Scholarship and will graduate from the combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree program in Accounting.

Matthew spoke about how Brother George was his father’s grammar school principal at St. Bartholomew’s 45 years ago, then several years later, how Bro. George then helped his aunt get into a good high school and put her on course to becoming a teacher.

“Twenty-five years after helping my aunt, he’s opening doors for me that I didn’t even know existed. I’m now able to see how privileged I am to have received this award,” said Anderson. “I just hope I can return the favor to someone someday.”

In talking about the scholarship that Julie and Anne Kelly established, Julie said, “The scholarship is an amazing gift because it takes away any financial burden so it gives the student a chance to really concentrate on their studies and really enjoy their college experience.”

St. Francis College currently has more than 200 endowed scholarships and offers additional grants and academic aid to more than 50 percent of the student population, while an additional 30 percent receive other forms of aid.
