Elevated Structure in Southern
Brooklyn Needs Renovation
BROOKLYN -- Tuesday, Sen. Charles Schumer announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will allocate more than $4 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), also known as the Stimulus Bill, to eight Brooklyn subway stations along the D and M subway lines that are in need of repairs.
The $4,396,596 in ARRA funding will be used for rail repair and rehab work at stations across Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Borough Park. The elevated subway stretch, which connects the Fourth Avenue subway tunnel with Coney Island, is also known as the West End line. Its deteriorating structure dates back to the 1910s. The rehab plan was discussed last year at local community boards by the MTA – what the allocation does is to expedite the repairs.
“This funding is great news for the subway system, for the workers it will put on the job, and a win-win for all Brooklyn straphangers,” Schumer said. “Straphangers from Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Borough Park will see much-needed station and track improvements along the D and M lines. Providing this essential funding for public transportation enhancements is a wise investment that will help the local Brooklyn economy while improving the commutes for thousands of Brooklyn residents.”
The stations are Bay Parkway, 71st Street, 79th Street, Ninth Avenue, 50th Street, 55th Street, 62nd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway. While the M train uses the route during rush hours, the D train uses it around the clock.
The funding will also be used to rehabilitate the elevated segment itself between Ninth Avenue and Bay 50th Street.
“This is exactly what the stimulus was meant to do: Put people to work and create lasting and meaningful improvements to the infrastructure, like the subway system, that makes our economy hum,” said Schumer.
