Brooklyn Today: Thursday, August 16, 2007
by Raanan Geberer (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 08-16-2007

Good morning. Today is the 228th day of the year. It is the birth anniversary of Menachem Begin, Polish-born leader of Israel during the late 1970s and early ’80s. A militant Zionist and anti-Communist, he fled Poland after the Nazi invasion only to be imprisoned by the Russians. Freed in 1943, he went to Palestine and became a leader in the Jewish anti-British underground. Although he believed that Jewish people were entitled to the “whole land of Israel” (including, in the early days, both sides of the Jordan), he signed the historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979.

Other well-known people who were born today include actress Angela Bassett, sportscaster and Hall of Fame football player Frank Gifford, singer Eydie Gorme (“Blame It on the Bossa Nova”), TV personality and singer Kathie Lee Gifford, and actor Fess Parker (“Daniel Boone,” “Davy Crockett”).

ZONING MEETING in Cobble Hill.

In New York City, zoning laws determine how land can be used, from the height of buildings to parking requirements to the allowed distance between factories and housing.

If you want to learn about the ins and outs of zoning, you might want to check out the South Brooklyn Accountable Development Initiative’s workshop, “Demystifying Zoning,” which will take place today from 2 to 5 p.m., and again from 6 to 9 p.m.

In Brooklyn, the city is slated to consider zoning changes in parts of Sunset Park and around the Gowanus Canal, including parts of lower Park Slope and Carroll Gardens.

The session will take place at the Fifth Avenue Committee’s offices, 621 DeGraw St., between Third and Fourth avenues.

To attend, you must RSVP to (718) 237-2017. The workshop is also sponsored by the Fifth Avenue Committee and the Pratt Center for Community Development.

‘BRIGHTON, OUR BEACH’: Cleanup Day at Shorefront Y’s Day Camp.

Today, day campers ages 5 to 14 and more than 40 camp staffers from the Shorefront YM-YWHA will dedicate a part of their camping experience to making sure the Brighton Beach oceanfront is clean and litter-free.

In addition to the beachfront activities, campers will participate in workshops about marine life and the importance of caring for our fragile environment endangered by society’s carelessness.

The cleanup project will start at 10 a.m. on the beach next to the Shorefront Y. The entire camp will proudly wear “Brighton, Our Beach” T-shirts and carry litter collection bags.

L Train Riders Asked To Fill Out ‘Report Cards’

Following a successful distribution of more than 88,000 of the first-ever Rider Report Card to riders who use the 7 Flushing Line, L Line customers in Brooklyn will have the opportunity to grade their subway line beginning today.

MTA New York City Transit staff will be on hand to distribute the Rider Report Cards at stations along the line during morning rush hours today and tomorrow. Today, the questionnaires will be distributed to riders from Bedford Avenue to Jefferson St. On Friday, they will be distributed to riders from Wyckoff Avenue to Rockaway Parkway.

The Report Card will ask riders to grade 21 specific areas of service from an A (Excellent) to an F (Unsatisfactory). The areas riders will grade include: car and station cleanliness, safety, security, quality of announcements, and the courtesy and helpfulness of front line customer service staff.

Riders will also assign an overall grade for L service. From this list of 21 service attributes, riders are going to be asked to rank the top three improvements they would like to see made to the line.

“We’re still analyzing the results for the 7 Line and hope to report those findings to riders very soon,” said NYC Transit President Howard H. Roberts, Jr. “We’ll also unveil a plan for how we’re going to act on their top three suggestions for improvements in service.”
