Brooklyn Today: Wednesday November 5, 2008
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 11-05-2008

Good morning. Today is the 310th day of the year. In England, it is Guy Fawkes Day, the anniversary of the “Gunpowder Plot” of 1605. Conspirators planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I with gunpowder, which they had secreted in a cellar under Parliament. The barrels of explosives were discovered the night of Nov. 4, the eve of the intended uprising. The following day, the conspirators were arrested. They were hanged on Jan. 31, 1606, including Guy Fawkes, the leader of the plot.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Art Garfunkel of Simon and Garfunkel, actress Tatum O’Neal (“Paper Moon,” “Bad News Bears”), dramatist-actor Sam Shepard and Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Walton.

MARKOWITZ TO HOST Interfaith Breakfast.

This morning at Borough Hall, Borough President Marty Markowitz and the New York State Department of Health will host an interfaith breakfast and seminar at Borough Hall to provide information to New Yorkers about health insurance as well as updates on Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit and food stamps. According to the state Health Department, nearly 211,000 children and teens in New York City, including 78,600 in Brooklyn, lack health insurance.

Many parents are unaware of the options available, including expanded eligibility for Child Health Plus health insurance as a result of legislation signed into law by Governor Paterson.

Children up to the age of 19 in families with an annual income up to $70,000 (for a family of three) or $84,000 (for a family of four) are now eligible to obtain free or low-cost coverage under the city’s Child Health Insurance Plus program.
