Brooklyn Today: Monday, April 13, 2009
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 04-13-2009

Good morning. Today is the 103rd day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1866) of Butch Cassidy, famed American outlaw, bank robber and leader of the Wild Bunch gang. Some say he died in a gun battle in Bolivia in 1909, while others say he returned to the U.S. and died here.

Other well-known people who were born today include singer Peabo Bryson, musician Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane, singer Al Greene (“Let’s Stay Together”) chess champion Garry Kasparov, Brooklyn-born actor Paul Sorvino (“Law and Order”) and TV bandleader Max Weinberg.

‘TULIPOMANIA’ COMES TO BOTANIC GARDEN.

What do 17th-century Holland and 21st-century Brooklyn have in common? Tulips, of course! “Breukelen” Botanic Garden’s Annual Border is a vibrant swath of brilliant ribbons of color that visitors anticipate toward the end of April and treasure every spring.

This year, in conjunction with the quadricentennial celebration of Dutch explorer Henry Hudson’s arrival on New York shores, the tulip border will provide visitors with even more than a dazzling visual, as it explores the surprisingly dramatic history of this legendary flower — and the “tulipomania” it spawned across around the world nearly 400 years ago.

Newly appointed curator Cayleb Long has developed a particular historical Dutch theme for the tulip border at BBG this spring. The border comprises 10,000 tulips representing 80 different species, cultivars and hybrids (and each of the 15 tulip divisions).

Almost all of the blooms will be bi- or tri-color in the tradition of the peculiar and rare “broken” tulip, which fueled the Dutch “tulipomania” of Rembrandt’s era.

SEN. MARTY GOLDEN ANNOUNCES Marine Park Office Hours.

State Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) is announcing that as of this week, his staff will be maintaining office hours at 3604 Quentin Road on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. Appointments will be made to accommodate those that cannot visit the office during the set hours of operation.

Sen. Golden said, “Every area within my district is important to me and I hope that these office hours will show my continued support for my constituents in Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach and Gravesend. “In addition to these office hours, I will continue to have regularly scheduled town hall meetings and events within the community. I stand readily accessible to address the concerns of my civic associations, block associations, schools, churches and my constituents as I have for since 2003.” Due to New York state budget cuts, Golden’s office at 3610 Quentin Road was forced to close after six years of providing services to the community.
