Brooklyn Today: Tuesday June 23, 2009
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-23-2009

Good morning. Today is the 174th day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1929) of June Carter Cash, Grammy-winning country and western star. She was a member of the Carter Family, a touring family group of country musicians responsible for many classic songs. She met Johnny Cash on the road in 1961, while Cash was still married to his first wife, and they began writing and singing together. They married in 1968, after Cash proposed to her on stage.

Other well-known people who were born today include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, professional dancer Louis Van Amstel, conductor and pianist James Levine and musician Randy Jackson.

‘NEW MUSLIM COOL’ Features Sunset Park Rapper.

“New Muslim Cool” kicks off the 22nd season of “P.O.V.” tonight at 10 p.m. on PBS.

The show focuses on Puerto Rican-American rapper Hamza Perez, originally from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He pulled himself out of drug dealing and street life by becoming a Muslim. Now, he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community.

“New Muslim Cool” takes viewers on Hamza’s ride through streets, slums and jail cells, including his spiritual journey.

The show’s jazz-based original score was composed by Chris Strollo, with additional tracks by hip-hop producer Soy Sos. It features appearances by members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Also included are two original composition by Puerto Rican guitarist Rey Nieves and several hip-hop songs by Hamza himself.

DEPRESSION, DEMENTIA, DELIRIUM — Answers to Questions.

Many seniors and their caregivers often keep persistent questions on depression, dementia and delirium to themselves.

Tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m., these questions can be asked and answered candidly at Beth Israel-Kings Highway Hospital, 1350 East 32nd St., Brooklyn.

The free program is organized by Beth Israel’s Geriatric Support and Outreach Services.

Guest speaker Harriet Blank, a social worker at the Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services, will discuss some of the signs and symptoms of these conditions and will also talk about how to get proper care for these conditions.

Light refreshments will be served, and advance registration is required. To register, call Mary Pickering at (718) 951-3065.
