Brooklyn Today: Tuesday, July 28, 2009
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 07-28-2009

Good morning. Today is the 209th day of they year. It is the birth anniversary (1901) of Rudy Vallee, saxophone player, singer and radio idol during the late 1920s and 1930s. Vallee used a megaphone to amplify his voice and began each radio show with the salutation, “Heigh-ho, everybody!” Later on, in the 1960s, he appeared in the famous motion picture How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Other well-known people who were born today include actor Darryl Hickman, actress Sally Struthers (“All in the Family”), former U.S. senator and Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Bradley and cartoonist Jim Davis (“Garfield”).

Today at noon, Borough President Marty Markowitz will be joined by Lou-Ellen Barkan, president of the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter, at Borough Hall. They will announce the first-ever “Memory Walk in Brooklyn” hosted by the Brooklyn Cyclones.

On Aug. 9, hundreds of New Yorkers will take the field at KeySpan Park in this one-mile walk to help raise funds and awareness against Alzheimer’s disease.

The walk will precede the Cyclones’ game against the Jamestown Jammers.

GWYNETH PALTROW TO Attend Benefit for Underprivileged Brooklyn Children. Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities will attend Children of the City’s Champions of Hope Benefit Gala to help underprivileged children in the inner-city communities of Brooklyn.

This year’s gala will be held at the Tribeca Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses St., at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a live auction. Following the silent auction will be an exquisite dinner and dessert.

The 2009 Children’s Champion Award Recipients are Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez (D-Sunset Park/Red Hook), Richard Mahler and John Abi-Habab.

“The Champions of Hope Benefit Gala is a tremendous opportunity to educate New Yorkers about the challenges these children have to face,” said Joyce Mattera, the organization’s founder and executive director.
