Good morning. Today is the 261st day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1905) of 1920s and ’30s movie star Greta Garbo. A famous recluse, the Swedish-born actress retired from films after her Two-Faced Woman received bad reviews in 1940. Among her better-known films were Queen Christina, Anna Karenina and Ninotchka.
Other well-known people who were born today include singer-actor Frankie Avalon, actor James Gandolfini, Hall of Fame baseball player Ryne Sandberg and world-champion bicyclist Lance Armstrong.
SCHOLASTIC ANNOUNCES $27,000 Book Donation to Eagle Academy.
Today, Scholastic employees will join members of One Hundred Black Men of New York City and students from the Eagle Academy for Young Men in Ocean Hill-Brownsville to celebrate the importance of reading and mentorship.
In addition, Scholastic will donate $27,000 to the school to buy books. Scholastic’s program is designed to combat the high illiteracy and dropout rates of young men of color in America.
Guest speakers will include New York City Deputy Schools Chancellor Santiago Taveras; Philip Banks Jr., president, One Hundred Black Men of New York City; Christopher Paul Curtis, author of the children’s book Elijah of Buxton; and Greg Worrell, president, Scholastic Classroom and Library Group.
The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. at the Eagle Academy, 1137 Herkimer St., corner of Saratoga Avenue.
POLICE DEPARTMENT Seeks Suspects in Drugstore Robberies.
The New York City Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating several suspects in connection with the robberies of seven pharmacies in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
In each incident, the suspects enter the pharmacies with their faces covered and armed with firearms. One of them goes behind the counter and removes cash and prescription drugs from the back offices. They then flee on foot.
In Brooklyn, the Just In Time Pharmacy at 2126 Knapp St. in the Sheepshead Bay area was hit twice by the crew: once on Tuesday, April 7, and again on Saturday, May 30.
The suspects are described as two young black men in their 20s or 30s. They are both approximately 5-foot-11 tall and weigh about 165 pounds.
