BROOKLYN POETRY OPEN MIC Remembers Ken Siegelman
This Thursday evening, Barnes & Noble at 267 Seventh Ave. will host a poetry open mic honoring the work of Ken Seigelman, Brooklyn poet laureate.
A special tribute will be shown, followed by an open mic with the poets reading one of Ken’s poems of their choice. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Siegelman, a Gravesend resident, was named poet laureate in 2002. He started writing poetry while teaching at Abraham Lincoln High School, as a way of communicating with his Spanish-speaking and Russian-speaking students.
For more than eight years, Siegelman hosted Brooklyn Poetry Outreach, a series of monthly poetry readings and discussions at the above-mentioned Barnes & Noble. He also participated in Borough President Marty Markowitz’ student poetry project.
STORM SURGES Around the Gowanus Canal.
No, we’re not talking about the political storm surging around the proposal to declare the Gowanus a Superfund site. We’re talking about actual storm surges and their probable effect on the canal.
On Friday, the Cobble Hill Association will sponsor a discussion on this topic at 6 p.m. at Long Island College Hospital, Hicks Street and Atlantic Avenue. The guest speaker will be Dr. Malcolm Bowman.
Dr. Bowman is a professor of physical oceanography and a distinguished professor at the Marine Science Research Center, State University at Stony Brook.
He is the coordinator of the Stony Brook Storm Surge Research group, which studies storm surges that threaten the New York metropolitan area, especially in this era of global climate change and rising sea levels.
