Good morning. Today is the 272nd day of the year. On this day in 1829, the Greater London Metropolitan Police first made their appearance, having been established by an act of Parliament in June 1829. Because they were introduced by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, the police officers became affectionately known as âbobbies.â Scotland Yards, the site of their first headquarters, soon became the official name of the force.
Well-known people who were born today include singer-musician Jerry Lee Lewis (âWhole Lot of Shakinâ Goinâ On,â âGreat Balls of Fire,â âBreathlessâ), TV journalist Bryant Gumbel, actress Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita), Hall of Fame football player Dave Wilcox, and Polish statesman and former president Lech Walesa.
