Good morning. Today is the 279th day of the year. On this day in 1981, Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat was assassinated while reviewing a military parade in Cairo. Extremists had been angry at Sadat since he negotiated a treaty with Israel several years earlier, even though he succeeded in getting all of the Israeli-occupied Sinai Desert returned to Egypt.
Well-known people who were born today include actress Britt Ekland, basketball player Rebecca Lobo, actress Stephanie Zimbalist and writer/producer David Zucker.
SAVED BY THE BELL
Today at 11 a.m. at Borough Hall, Borough President Marty Markowitz will welcome the historic Dreamland bell, recovered by divers from the ocean floor off Coney Island, where it rested for nearly 100 years since the great fire of 1911.
Joining Markowitz will be Gene Ritter and members of his diving team who discovered the bell beneath 25 feet of ocean water.
The 500-pound bell will remain on display at Borough Hall for the next two weeks.
It originally was located at the Dreamland ferry pier off West Eighth Street, where it welcomed visitors who came to Coney Island by steamboat.
