Brooklyn Today: Thursday, October 22, 2009
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 10-22-2009

Good morning. Today is the 295th day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1903) of Bensonhurst-born comedian Jerome “Curly” Howard, one of the Three Stooges during their heyday. Curly was the brother of Moe, the “head stooge,” and Shemp, who replaced Curly in 1947. Curly’s trademarks were his high voice, his nonsense syllables such as “woo-woo-woo” (which originated when he couldn’t remember his lines), and his physical comedy. Off the set, he was known for his excessive eating, drinking, spending and womanizing, and he suffered a series of strokes beginning in 1945. He and Shemp only appeared in one film together — Hold That Lion in 1947.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Catherine Deneuve (Repulsion, Indochine), actor Jeff Goldblum (The Big Chill, The Fly), baseball player Ichiro Suzuki, and singer-actress Annette Funicello (“Mickey Mouse Club,” Beach Party movies).

MARKOWITZ TO CELEBRATE Latino Heritage.

Also today at Borough Hall, at 6 p.m., Borough President Marty Markowitz will honor El Diario’s Rossana Rosado, Cesar Perales of Latino Justice PRLDF and Make the Road New York at his annual celebration of Latino heritage.

The gathering will also provide attendees with an opportunity to donate to the family of Mario Vera, the Bushwick resident seriously injured in a recent attack being investigated as a hate crime.

Rossana Rosado has been the publisher at CEO of El Diario/La Presna since 1999. She was previously a columnist and reporter for the paper. She also has worked as public service director for WPIX and vice president for public affairs at the city’s Health and Hospital Corporation.

Cesar Perales, president and general counsel for Latino Justice PRLDF, was a co-founder of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund in 1972 and served as its executive director. He was assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services during the administration of President Jimmy Carter, and was the commissioner of the Department of Social Services under Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The evening’s events will be a celebration of the many faces of Brooklyn’s Latino community, featuring music from Grupo Folkorico “Raices de Mexico” and food from many nations.
