Good morning. Today is the 301st day of the year. On this day in 1950, The Jack Benny Show, an adaptation of an earlier radio show, came to TV. Among Benny’s guest stars were Frank Sinatra, Claudette Colbert, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Carson and Humphrey Bogart.
Well-known people who were born today include actress Julia Roberts (Erin Brokovich, Ocean’s Eleven), computer executive and philanthropist Bill Gates, musician-singer Charlie Daniels (“Devil Went Down to Georgia”) and actress Jane Alexander.
PARK SLOPE ARMORY ATHLETIC CENTER on Agenda at Slope Meeting.
Today, the Parks and Recreation and the Youth and Human Services committees of Community Board 6 will meet to hear a presentation on the progress of the planned recreation and athletic center at the Park Slope Armory.
Representatives of the city’s Department of Homeless Services (which operates a shelter in part of the armory) and the Prospect Park YMCA will be present at the meeting.
It will take place at the Prospect Park YMCA, 357 Ninth St., Park Slope, at 6:30 p.m.
MARKOWITZ TO HOST Polish-American Celebration.
Tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Borough Hall, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Polish Consul General Krzysztof Kasprzyk and Deputy Consul General Marek Skulimowski will host a celebration of Polish-American Heritage Month.
This year, Borough President Markowitz will honor:
Bogdan Bachorowski, vice president, Pulaski Association of Business and Professional Men;
Danuta Bronchard, director, Maria Konopnicka Polish Supplementary School in Greenpoint;
Nadia Bryziec, manager, Krakowianki and Gorale Children’s Dance Group, ;
Rev. Canon Witold Mroziewski, pastor, Our Lady of Czestochowa St. Casmir Roman Catholic Church.
This year’s festivities will also include musical selections and food from Poland.
