by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 11-17-2009

Good morning. Today is the 321st day of they year. It is the anniversary of the 1734 arrest of John Peter Zenger, colonial printer and journalist who established the New York Weekly Journal. Zenger was charged with libel against the colonial governor. His acquittal in August of the following year was an important early step in establishing freedom of the press in America.

Well-known people who were born today include director Martin Scorsese (Mean Streets, The Color of Money, Raging Bull, Goodfellas), singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot (“Early Morning Rain,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”), former Vermont governor Howard Dean and Hall of Fame baseball great Tom Seaver.
